Discover Saint-Brevin’s cultural heritage
1. In the footsteps of prehistory
Step back in time 5000 years before our era to contemplate the megaliths scattered across the Pays de Retz. Less than 3 km from the Les Rochelets campsite, you’ll have the chance to see one of them as you stroll through the only dune forest on the Atlantic coast, the forêt de la pierre attelée. Seven other megalithic sites have also been listed in Saint-Brevin, and a dozen menhirs, dolmens and tumuli are accessible in the Pays de Retz.
2. Retz Country Museum
Once the megalithic period has been explored, the Musée du Pays du Retz completes this historical interlude in a 1300 m² space. The visit includes various collections such as mineralogy, geology and everyday life in the 20th century.
3. Casemate 105 C
Just 3.5 kilometers from the Saint-Brevin campsite, summer visitors can visit a site steeped in history and entirely restored by volunteers: Casemate 105 C. Visits to this Atlantic Wall bunker can be booked at the tourist office.
4. The naval museum
Located in the Mindin fort built under Napoleon in the 19th century, the Musée de la Marine houses 3 collections on different contemporary themes. During your visit, you’ll discover the Vendée Globe and the Route du Rhum.
5. Ocean snake
Just a stone’s throw from the Musée de la Marine, it’s not unusual to discover a huge creature sticking its head out of the water! This is the work of artist Huang Yong Ping, created in 2012 during the Estuaire festival.
6. Visit to an exhibition
During the month of September, let yourself be surprised by an exhibition that’s well worth the detour! Whether you’re a philatelist or not, you can visit the philatelic exhibition on bicycles in the hall of St Brevin town hall until September 28.
