Crossing the Parc naturel r\u00e9gional de Bri\u00e8re, stop off at the village of Kerhinet in Saint-Lyphard, west of the marshes. The village is entirely pedestrianized and freely accessible all year round. Here you’ll discover life as it was in the past, in the heart of a delightful village of thatched cottages, saved from ruin in the 1970s. <\/p>\n\n

A thatched-roof village in Loire-Atlantique<\/h2>\n\n

Near Saint-Nazaire, in the heart of the Bri\u00e8re Regional Nature Park,<\/strong> Saint-Lyphard boasts a heritage of 800 thatched cottages<\/strong>, scattered across numerous hamlets. The village of Kerhinet is the best known<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

This former weavers’ village<\/strong>, entirely pedestrianized<\/strong>, is one of the most visited tourist sites in the Loire-Atlantique department. It welcomes almost 200,000 visitors <\/strong>every year. You’ll discover 18 thatched cottages restored<\/strong> in the traditional style of the Bri\u00e8re region, flowerbeds, an inn, a washhouse, a bread oven, craft stores and much more… <\/p>\n\n

The best things to do in Kerhinet<\/h2>\n\n

This typical Bri\u00e8re village, reserved for pedestrians and strollers, is open all year round. Visits<\/strong> are free of charge<\/strong>. A large parking lot is located at the entrance to the village. You can then walk along the long driveway that leads to the thatched cottages of Kerhinet. There’s so much to see, you could easily spend a day here. <\/p>\n\n

Visit the Maison du Parc<\/strong>: the ideal starting point for exploring the village of Kerhinet. There’s a permanent exhibition on the village’s heritage: thatched cottages, wash-house, bread ovens… <\/p>\n\n

Explore the heritage discovery trail<\/strong>: this interpretive trail introduces visitors to the life of the former inhabitants of Kerhinet and the small heritage buildings (thatched cottages, wells, washhouse, two bread ovens, etc.).<\/p>\n\n

Lunch at theAuberge de Kerhinet<\/a>: <\/strong> in a rustic setting, discover traditional Bri\u00e8re dishes such as cassoulet bri\u00e9ron, pigeon de Mesquer, frog legs and eel en persillade.<\/p>\n\n

Picnicking<\/strong>: every Thursday in summer, you can picnic on site with dishes prepared by local producers. Picnic area with benches and shaded tables. <\/p>\n\n

Shopping <\/strong>at La Chaumi\u00e8re des Saveurs et de l’Artisanat<\/a>: local artists, craftspeople and producers share a boutique in the heart of the village. Wooden creations, ceramics, artisan jewelry, savory groceries, basketry, clothing, natural cosmetics… <\/p>\n\n

The thatched-roof house, the Bri\u00e9ron spirit<\/h2>\n\n

The Bri\u00e8re Regional Nature Park <\/strong>is home to nearly 3,000 thatched cottages <\/strong>spread throughout the region, representing around 60% of thatched roofs in France<\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n

Thatch is a traditional roofing material. In the past, these roofs were made of rye straw or rush. Today, reed roofs<\/strong> are the most common in Bri\u00e8re<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n

Did you know?<\/strong> Abandoned during the XIX\u1d49 century, the village of Kerhinet almost disappeared <\/strong>before being saved from oblivion by the Parc naturel r\u00e9gional de Bri\u00e8re, which undertook its complete restoration<\/strong> from 1973 onwards.<\/p>\n\n

At the Kerhinet market, fill your basket and your stomach<\/h2>\n\n

Every Thursday in summer<\/strong>, the village of Kerhinet hosts a farmers’ market<\/strong>, a showcase for local agriculture. A veritable institution for over thirty years, it brings together regulars and tourists around the same table. All this in a rural setting and a musical atmosphere. <\/p>\n\n

More than twenty local farmers<\/strong> handle everything from direct sales to on-site catering: bread<\/strong>, cheeses<\/strong>, honey<\/strong>, charcuterie<\/strong>, organic vegetables, meat, p\u00e2t\u00e9s, rillettes, marsh samphire<\/strong>, as well as artisanal products such as wool<\/strong>, essential oils, spirulina <\/strong>and saffron<\/strong>. And let’s not forget our craft beers and oysters from Mesquer, direct from the producer. <\/p>\n\n
